On Fandoms

Hey, it’s a post not related to Blogging 101.

Not that it hasn’t been useful. It has. For instance, since I recommitted myself to this whole writing thing, I’ve actually developed a list of topics that I could potentially write about. One of them is the topic of fandoms.

Oh, don’t roll your eyes at me. I know I’m a geek and I don’t care what anyone thinks of it.

The wonderful site, The Mary Sue had a funny article about what to do when your coworker writes fanfic…erotic fanfic. By the way, if you’re wondering why Mary Sue see this article found on wikipedia. There are other terms when dealing with fandom, most specifically with fanfic…which I’m not going to list because there’s just too many of them, thanks. If you’re really, really interested I would suggest heading over to
Archive of Our Own
or to Fanfiction.net to check out stories. Naturally, some are better than others. Many are written by teenage girls and the language reflects it. There are a *whole* lot of fics that are NSFW and could possibly squick you out.

[Side note #1: Squick, according to the Urban Dictionary sites that squick is:

1. Noun. The physical sense of repulsion upon encountering a concept or situation one finds disgusting.
2. Noun. A situation or concept which engenders this reaction.
3. Verb, transitive. To cause someone to have this reaction.
4. Verb, intransitive. To experience this reaction. ]

[Side note #2: I sure am filled with many a hyperlink, aren’t I?]

Anyway, we are a diverse bunch with tastes that run vanilla to the very, very exotic. I like to think that participating (no matter what level) allows that person to delve into something that they usually do in their normal real life. It doesn’t mean that we’re all deviants. It means that we’re very into what we like or love. Like being really passionate about things and defending them.

Yes, it means we’re a little crazy, much to the confusion and consternation of those not involved in a fandom, but whatever. We’re okay with it. <a href="http://www.tumblr.com"Tumblr is where you *really* want to go for fandom. (Yes, I was on tumblr, but not anymore.) I’m just happy to sit back and read…just the way I like it.
